Gall stones and its scope in Homoeopathy

One of the most common causes of acute pain abdomen in adult population is gall stone colic. It is such a common medical condition that we come across regularly in our own family and within our neighbourhood that little knowledge about the condition is always necessary, even for the non medical public.
First of all, it is a condition which mostly affects the adult population than the younger age group. These are rare in first two decades of life, but the incidence increases gradually after 21 yrs, and reaches its peak in 5th and 6th decades of life.
Secondly, it is one of those disease conditions that have more affinity towards women than the men. The difference ratio is as high as 4: 1 in women as compared to men. More interesting than this is its affinity towards a particular type of patient profile. It is denoted by four F’s:- Female, Fatty, Forty and Fertile (One who has born many children).
There are various compositions of gall stones. Major elements are cholesterol, bile pigments, and calcium mainly though traces of iron, carbonates, phosphorous, proteins, cellular debris, mucus and carbohydrates are also found in the stones. The mechanism of formation of such stones is mainly metabolic. Decrease in the level of bile salts and lecithin (a phospholipid) initiates precipitation of cholesterol and thus gradually cholesterol stones form. Pigment stones are mainly formed due to excessive destruction of red blood cells as seen in haemolytic anaemia, septic haemolysis and malaria. Besides infection, temporary cessation of flow of bile into the intestine and stagnation of bile in the gall bladder, reflux of the pancreatic enzyme into the gall bladder etc are also considered to be important factor for development of such stones.

Many cases of gall stones remain asymptomatic for a long time. Half of them become symptomatic after few years of development and in 15 to 20%, serious complications including carcinoma of gall bladder are seen to develop. One of the most common presentations is flatulent dyspepsia usually after a large or fatty meal. Patients complain fullness in abdomen, belching and heart burn, normally after food. But the most distressing complaint is the occasional severe gall stone colic. It usually starts at night, when the patient goes to bed for sleep. Pain may refer to inferior angel of right scapula. The pain becomes very severe soon, and is often associated with nausea and vomiting. The pain again suddenly disappears suddenly after few hours. This kind of pain may repeat at certain interval of and on.
Where in modern medicine, the most popular treatment of the condition is cholecystectomy (surgical removal of the gall bladder along with the stones), let us now see what the scopes of Homoeopathy are in this so called surgical disease. Well, the possibilities of spontaneous recovery from the disease by passing out of stones, as in case of renal calculi is not so much encouraging due to the anatomical variation of the two organs. In case of kidneys, the ureter as well as bladders is placed below and downward. So, there is a greater possibility of passing   of smaller stones downwards with gravitational pool and expulsive force of the organs. The situation is different in case of gall bladder. The fundus is placed at a much lower level than the neck. So, spontaneous expulsion is not possible against the gravitational pool. Besides, as the fundus is much spacious, stones get enough chance to increase in size without giving any symptom and likewise, it becomes much wider than the diameter of the neck to get through. This is also the main reason for late appearance of pain and symptoms in case of gall stones as compared to renal stones. By the time, patient starts to feel acute pain abdomen or dyspeptic troubles, the stones already become much bigger and harder. So, treating a gall stone case successfully is a great challenge for any conservative treatment procedure like Homoeopathy, particularly when the calculi/ calculus are considerably bigger.

Whether the complete dissolution and or expulsion of calculi is possible by homoeopathic treatment or not is still a major question yet unsolved, acute pain management and conservative treatment are very well delivered with proper homoeopathic treatment. While many homoeopathic societies have frequently claimed to treat and cure gall stone case successfully here and there, but any systematic study report with a good number of cases been treated successfully is yet to be published. Even then, we must consider like we always do in most other disease conditions that gall stones cases are also very much a curable disease, if we get the cases earlier, and if we treat them homoeopathically.
Considering the formation of calculi by deposition or precipitation of certain elements within our body, which are otherwise not harmful is some kind of defect in the whole system, an in- coordination, we can comprehend easily that the misametic predominance in this disease is actually sycosis in multimiasmetic background. So while treating such cases, it is always mandatory to look for the signs or indications of the underlying miasmetic disease individually for each and every case coming to us, and administer proper antimiasmetic medicines if we are at all expecting to cure such cases, or at least hoping to give suitable amelioration.
There are plenty of excellent remedies within our domain of treatment, used for acute and chronic conditions. Amongst them Aurum met, Arsenic, Belladonna, Berberis vulgaris, Bryonia, Calcarea carb, Carduus marianus, Chelidonium, Chionanthus, China, Colocynthis, Dioscorea, Fel tauri, Gelsemium, Hydrastis. Lycopodium, Lachesis, Nux vom, Podophyllum, Opium, Taraxacum etc are popularly used. Indications of these medicines in gall stone diseases are intentionally not given here, because we strictly discourage any kind of self medication, even homoeopathic in such kind of diseases. If you are a patient, or patient party, it is advisable to you to consult any nearby Homoeopathic physician, rather than trying a hit and trial method. It always harms you rather than giving any help.

It is repeatedly observed that homoeopathy can effectively reduce the rate of growth of renal stones when taken in long term basis. It is also observed in many cases with modern investigations that the sizes of the stones are also considerably reduced over years by proper homoeopathic treatment and surgical removal may be delayed. Hopefully, in coming years, more good results are expected to come.

COMMON WINTER REMEDIES

COMMON WINTER REMEDIES
It’s already very cold in many parts of the world, especially Europe and Northern America and in most other parts temperature is speedily falling. Another period of season change and the most dangerous time, so far as health is concerned. In parts where the temperature remained so far relatively hot and humid for most of the year and now atmosphere has suddenly changed to a winter, people mostly becomes the easy victim of many opportunistic infections. It is the imbalance in homoeostasis and adaption that makes people immunologically weak and we fell sick very easily. We were accustomed to the summer season, used to wear light cotton dresses, drunk lot of chilled drinks and ice cream, bathed in cold water and slept under full speed fan or a low temperature air conditioning. But now, weather has changed faster than we could adopt and change our year long habit. It is more dangerous when the days are still hot but as night approaches, the mercury column falls speedily to a very low temperature.
Why we easily fell sick in winter?
Most of us are still thinking the light dress we were so long wearing would still be enough and went out in a ride in the evening against the dry, cold winds. We are still asking for a chilled beer or a cold drink or an ice cream at the restaurant and we are still using the fan in maximum speed. And what is the result? A very common sore throat, a running nose, a severe headache or a high fever, the very next morning. In some weaker patients, the result is still worse, a severe cough, pneumonia or bronchitis.
How can we avoid winter ailments?
It’s simple, just remember one thing, we need to be careful. You may be very robust and enjoy the best of health throughout the year, but when it is winter, specially the transitional period, be careful and do not take a cold voluntarily.
Ø Do not wear light garments towards the evening, specially if you have plans to go out. The atmosphere outside must be colder than you can expect and the cold winter wind is really dangerous. Take proper protection for your chest, throat and ears as these regions tend to lose the body heat more quickly.
Ø Change your food habit for some period. Avoid cold drinks, ice creams and chilled juices as far as possible, they may give you more trouble than you can imagine. Rather, take hot tea or coffee and take other foods warm as well.
Ø Do not use cold water for bathing and do not sleep under high speed fan or air conditioning. Also, do close your windows and doors closed during nights to prevent cold waves to enter in your room.
Ø Do not neglect minor ailments of any member of your family. As many people live within a confined place with poor ventilation of fresh air during winter at your home, there is always increased chance of air borne contamination of many diseases during winter.
Ø Take lots of seasonal foods, fruits specially which contain lots of vitamin C and A like all seasonal coloured fruits, lime, amla, guava, orange etc. this will increase your immunity and resist infections.
What are the commonly indicated Homoeopathic remedies?
The most commonly indicated medicines that you may keep in your medicine box are Aconite nap, Ferrum phos, Bryonia, Belladonna, Gelsimium, Arsenicum album, Arum triphyllum, Chamomilla, Dulcamara, Eupetorium, Hepar sulph, Mercurius, Phosphorus, Psorinum, Rumex, Silicea, Spongia, Sulphur and Tuberculinum.

SEASONAL FEVERS

Among all diseases that we suffer during this part of the year, between April to July, specially in tropical countries of East, is seasonal fever. This is the period of the year, when there is some kind of imbalance in the surrounding weather. The season changes from summer to rainy, now it is very hot, and then there is suddenly heavy rainfall and temperature falls. You might have been working whole day under the sun, your kids might be playing in hot and dry weather during the school; but on the way back home you or your child had to wet in a sudden spell of rain. This is the time, when weather condition changes often and very quickly and our body can’t adapt to such sudden changes in the surrounding and our immunity level falls considerably. This is peak time for the opportunistic infections to attack our body and fever is the most common disease that we are going to face as a result. Of course, not everybody is affected in the community; some real healthy people with good level of immunity surely escape. As this kind of mild to moderate fever usually appears during this particular change in the season and on investigation, no significantly virulent organism is not found to be diagnosed otherwise, we term them popularly as Seasonal fever. This same may also appear during the time when weather changes before the winter approaches and this is applicable to any part of the world, whether East of West.
Depending upon symptoms, there are some excellent and harmless Homoeopathic medicines for this seasonal fevers and on perfect selection, the fever may well subside with all its complications within just two three days and you don’t have to take those Analgesics, antipyretics or strong antibiotics unnecessarily. Homoeopathic Practioners should know them very well, it is just for your recollection, but very important for the students to learn and if you are a non medical person, you can still try them yourself though it is not generally recomended to experiment medicines without any medical supervision.

IS KELOID CURABLE?

Well, it’s a frequently asked question that we face while dealing with our patients, specially those who are actually suffering from keloids. Let me tell u this is one among the most important questions a common patient may ask. There are many false conceptions fixed in the minds of common people, but let me clear at least two facts about them.
Firstly, keloids are purely benign and non contagious and you can live with them for years without any apparent danger.
Secondly, they are curable.
Yes, keloids are curable, safely and Homoeopathy is your automatic choice of treatment. But why Homoeopathy, when we have extremely advanced modern medicines and surgeries available? For this we must know what it is and how is the prognosis with allopathic treatment.
What is a keloid?
Keloid is actually an extremely over grown scar tissue which develops over a healed wound. They are shiny, tough, rubbery lesions and colour may vary from red to dark brown or pink to flesh coloured. They are raised from the skin level, margins irregular and go beyond, often far beyond the actual boundary of the wound. They are mainly painless, but in most cases they are very itchy and tender to touch or pressure. The wounds may be from simple injury (even as simple as ear prick), surgical wounds and most frequently burn injuries.
Keloids are frequently confused with Hypertrophic scars which are also elevated, but they never go beyond the boundary of the original wound.
Conventional treatment of keloids
Popular modern methods are corticosteroid therapy, surgical or laser removal followed by corticosteroids, silicon patches, radiation and also cryosurgery. But the recurrence rate is very high and fresh, even more extensive and angrier keloid scars are often found to reappear from these treatments. Not to mention the other side effects.
Why Homoeopathy?
Because, Homoeopathy can reduce, even remove the keloid scars and the symptoms arising from it like excessive itching, pricking pain or tenderness. Homoeopathy is absolutely safe, free of any side effects and recurrence rate is also low following complete treatment.
What are the Homoeopathic medicines for keloids?
Like always, I would say, never go for typical disease based treatment approach, because you may often fail. For the readers who are non medical persons, I would say, “Please don’t try any medicine yourself, consult your Homoeopathic family physician. Your scar is a serious condition and careless handling may be dangerous.”
For my fellow professional brothers and sisters, I would advice you to study your patient thoroughly, take the full case and you will get your medicine. For your help, let me guide you that your keloid patient is mostly a sycotic or sycopsoric patient with a tubercular background. So select your medicines accordingly and you will find gradual reduction in size and symptom intensity.
Fluoric acid, Graphites, Nitric acid, Silicea are frequently used with benefits though any other remedy, if covers the totality will work equally well.
As burn injury is a predisposition to keloids, early and effective homoeopathic burn care will surely reduce the future occurrence.
